"The Ethics of Democracy" series

“The Ethics of Democracy” is a university-wide series of events during the winter and spring. Sponsored by the McCoy Center for Ethics in Society, the Department of Art & Art History, the Department of Music, and Stanford Law School, the series will explore the ethics of democracy from the perspective of scholars, practitioners, and civil leaders across the country. The series begins on February 8 with the annual Wesson Lecture on Problems in Democracy, delivered this year by Congressman Barney Frank. In February, we will also celebrate the 65th anniversary of the publication of Kenneth Arrow's groundbreaking book, Social Choice and Individual Values. Later in the quarter, former Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich, will be in conversation with (another) Rob Reich, Faculty Director of the McCoy Center. “The Ethics of Democracy” series will also include musical performances by both the St. Lawrence String Quartet and the Calidore String Quartet in order to explore the string quartet as a democratic institution. Additionally, visual artists and scholars of visual culture will lead conversations about marginalized voices in the art world, and art as a form of political protest.
