I agree with Allan about the drones, they were probably waiting for your orders because their health bars were your color instead of a third color.

+quill18 barbs might just have walked over, only other explanation I can think of is that the horsemen that finished that turn in a city gave you plus two happiness, pushing you under -10 and causing barb spawn. this would obviously be a glitch, but it is a mod.

You do find them later on; they're very grateful and working at an inn.
