Overview
Renovated in 2009, Crothers Hall, consisting of Crothers, Crothers Memorial, and the Mark Taper Student Center, is a vibrant upperclass community located very conveniently to the center of campus. 380 students, housed in generously sized single and double rooms, enjoy spacious indoor and outdoor common spaces as well as the many resources available in the Mark Taper Student Center.
Crothers Hall and Crothers Memorial, formerly two separate residences, were named for sponsor Judge George Edward Crothers, “one of the University’s most illustrious and beloved sons.” One of the first students to enter Leland Stanford Junior University on its opening day, Crothers also was the first graduate in law (1896), the first Stanford alumnus to serve on the Stanford Board of Trustees, and the first to endow a law scholarship (1912).
After graduating from Stanford, Crothers ran a flourishing law practice with his brother, T. G. Crothers. After leading a campaign in 1900 to amend the California Constitution that would solidify the University’s judicial structure, Crothers became Jane Stanford’s advisor and lawyer. He was appointed to California’s Superior Court bench in 1913.
During the closing years of Mrs. Stanford’s life, Judge Crothers administered a trust of about $6,000,000 and conveyed it to the University upon her death - without, it is reported, “stirring a single word of public comment to excite litigation.”

Global Citizenship Academic Theme (academic year only) Global citizenship refers to a moral and ethical disposition: the quality of an individual’s response to living in a socially, economically, culturally, and politically interconnected world. This would be an ideal living community for students who want an intensive, residential educational experience to help them grapple with what it means to be part of a globalized world. Crothers will allow students of many different majors the opportunity to investigate the ethical, policy, and practical implications of globalization. See pre-assignment and regular assignment information below. |
Important Assignment Information
Residential Education is offering a pre-assignment system for all Special Program Houses (Ethnic/Academic Theme, Focus and Cooperative Houses) for the academic year. This process will allow Resident Fellows, Faculty Affiliates, and house program staff to pre-assign a set number of residents who complete the pre-assignment application and meet all necessary requirements prior to the Housing Draw. Here is the Residential Education link for detailed pre-assignment information.
There are THREE ways to get in to Special Program Houses. Please see the Theme and Focus Houses page for details.
