Overview of Conditions Treated

The Liver Clinic specializes in the treatment of hepatitis and other liver diseases, including:

Ascites

An accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, causing abdominal swelling; usually occurs when the liver is not working properly. 

Alcoholic cirrhosis

The most serious type of alcohol-related liver disease; alcoholic cirrhosis is the scarring of the liver in which hard scar tissue replaces soft healthy tissue. 

Alcoholic hepatitis

An inflammation of the liver typically caused by excessive alcohol consumption over a long period of time. 

Autoimmune hepatitis

A disease of the liver that occurs when the body's immune system attacks cells of the liver.

Hemochromatosis

Also called iron overload disease,  characterized by the absorption of too much iron from food. Instead of secreting the excess iron, the iron is stored throughout the body, including the liver and pancreas; the excess iron can damage these organs.

Hepatic encephalopathy

A complex brain disorder that develops in some individuals with liver disease; the condition ranges from no outward signs or symptoms to a severe form that can cause serious, life-threatening complications.

Hepatomegaly

A condition in which the liver is enlarged; may signal an underlying condition, including hepatitis, and may lead to liver failure.

Hepatitis A

A highly contagious and sometimes serious liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. Approximately one-third of Americans have been exposed to hepatitis A.

Hepatitis B

A disease of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus, transmitted through blood and body fluid exposure.

Hepatitis C

A liver disease caused by a blood-borne virus, leading to chronic liver disease.

Hepatitis D

A type of viral hepatitis can only occur in the presence of hepatitis B.

Liver tumors

The liver can grow both non-cancerous (benign) and cancerous (malignant) tumors.Non-cancerous tumors are quite common and usually do not produce symptoms. Cancerous tumors in the liver have either originated in the liver or spread from elsewhere in the body.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis

Inflammation in the liver caused by a buildup of fat in the liver.

Portal hypertension

An increase in the blood pressure  caused by blockages within a system of veins called the portal venous system. If the vessels in the liver are blocked due to liver damage, blood cannot flow properly through the liver, resulting in potentially life-threatening complications.

Primary biliary cirrhosis

A rare form of liver cirrhosis caused by disease or defects of the bile ducts; leading to inflammation and destruction of bile ducts in the liver.
