Overview

Welcome to the data protection solution that stays out of your way while you work. To help protect your data from loss, Code42 automatically collects and stores every version of every file you have selected for backup across all your computers. When you need to recover a file or a version of a file, the Code42 app makes it easy to browse, search, and restore files from all of the computers on your account.

Follow the three quick steps below to start protecting your files from loss, corruption, and unwelcome file changes.

Using CrashPlan for Small Business?
This article is for Code42 for Enterprise. If you're using CrashPlan for Small Business, see Set up CrashPlan for Small Business for information on getting started.

Step 1: Install the Code42 app

If the Code42 app isn’t already installed on your computer (also known as a device), check with your administrator for download links and instructions. For step-by-step instructions, see our guide to installing the Code42 app.

Step 2: Set up your backup

Your administrator may configure your Code42 app to begin backing up immediately after you sign in to a computer for the first time.

If your backup isn't already configured, the Code42 app will prompt you to set up your first backup set.

Step 3: View backup status and download files

Now that you’re backing up, you can quickly view the status of your backup from the Code42 app icon in your notification area (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).

This is also a great time to download a file from your backup so that you can see how it works.

  1. Open the Code42 app.
  2. Go to your backed up files:
  • Code42 app version 6.8.3 and later:
    1. Click Restore Files.
    2. (Applies only if you have multiple devices) From the menu, select the device that originally backed up the files you want to restore.
  • Code42 app version 6.8.2 and earlier:
    1. Click Get Files.
  1. Navigate to a file.file icon
  2. Mouse over the file and click the download iconDownload icon.
Your download is added to the downloads manager with the default options. The downloads manager displays the status of your download.
  3. Open Downloads and click Show folder Show folder to open the folder containing your file.

That's it! It's safe to close the Code42 app while your backup continues quietly, behind the scenes. If you turn your computer off, the Code42 app will resume where it left off the next time you turn the computer back on.
