We were very sorry to hear of the death of Colin Pillinger yesterday. We remember his time as Gresham Professor of Astronomy (1996 - 2000) with immense pride.

Something we learned in last night’s lecture:
Despite the UN General Council’s 1950 approval of a motion that effectively undercut all head of state immunity where serious crimes were concerned, it is extremely rare for any head of state to ever be prosecuted. For example, General Pinochet, who was responsible for mass murders during his 17 years as dictator of Chile, was never successfully held to account.

The wording of the 1950 motion was that: “the fact that an author of an act which constitutes a crime under international criminal law has acted in his capacity as a head of state or of government does not release him of his responsibility under international law.”

Something we learned at Dr Milne's lecture:
Most Elizabethan pirates were probably cockneys. This is because the City of London sponsored most of the privateering in that period.

Free public lectures since 1597. An archive of over 1,500 lectures online
Introduction
Gresham College provides nearly 150 free public lectures by leading academics and public figures each year, all of which are free and open to all
This tradition of providing free public lectures began with our founding in 1597, making us London's oldest higher education institution.
We have been recording and released all of our lectures for free on our website since the 1980s. There are currently over 1,500 lectures available and new ones are being added each week.
Lectures are on a wide range of topics, such as the following: Bill Bryson on the History of Science, Sir Andrew Motion on the value of the arts, the Archbishop of Canterbury on the early Christian Church, Baroness Deech on human embryo cloning, Sir Geoffrey Nice QC on the trial of Slobodan Milosevic, Carolin Crawford on the Big Bang, and much else besides.
