The Anderson Collection at Stanford University is hosting the second annual Burt and Deedee McMurtry Lecture at Cemex Auditorium featuring this year’s distinguished guest artist, ROBERT IRWIN.
For more than six decades, Robert Irwin (b. 1928, Long Beach, California) has explored perception as the fundamental issue of art. Irwin, who began his career as a painter in the 1950s and became the pioneer of the L.A.-based “Light and Space” movement in the 1960s, has, through a continual breaking down of the frame, come to regard the role of art as “conditional,” or something that works in and responds to the specific surrounding world of experience.

Ideas about Space – these dances address the idea of shared spaces: the mental space (of the dancer, of the watcher), the space between (dancer and object/dancer and dancer/dancer and watcher), the space around (the clear space surrounding the dancer), the space within (the height, width and depth of the space create meaning).

Film Screening: Philip Guston: A Life Lived

Guston looks back over a career that originated in social realism during the ’30s, moved to the center of Abstract Expressionism, and culminated in a return to figuration. Filmed at his retrospective at SFMOMA in 1980 and at his Woodstock studio, the artist speaks candidly about his philosophy of painting and the psychological motivation for his work.
Stanford New Ensemble: Spatial, Visual, and Expressive

Social Furniture Workshops with MoreLab!
MoreLab will conduct a series of social furniture exploration and prototyping workshops with Stanford students across varied disciplines. Using cheap and off-the-shelf materials, participants in the workshop will explore the areas around the Anderson Collection building, and develop a series of social furniture prototypes that invite collaboration, informal social interaction, experimentation and play.
Combat Paper Workshop with Stanford Live
Monday, November 2 from 3-5pm and again from 5-7pm, FREE. Meet outside the museum, facing the Cantor Arts Center’s North Lawn.
Students, veterans, and the community are invited to participate in workshops where uniforms worn in service will be transformed into handmade paper. The workshops will be an opportunity to create works of art and share our understandings about the collective responsibilities of military service.
Artist Talk: MoreLab

MoreLab’s Groove Grove is currently installed on the grounds of the Anderson Collection. Based in Oakland, California, Morelab creates innovative artworks, installations and experiences that examine our understanding of the social, political and ecological dynamics of public space. Founded in 2013 by Matthew Passmore, the original founder of the Rebar Art & Design Studio (“Rebar”), Morelab works with cultural institutions, government agencies and private entities to enhance the quality, character and understanding of the public realm.
This fall, Morelab will conduct a series of social furniture exploration and prototyping workshops with Stanford students across varied disciplines. Film Screening: Agnes Martin: With My Back to the World

A moving documentary on the internationally renowned painter, designated by ARTnews Magazine one of the world’s top-ten living artists. This documentary was shot over a period of four years, from 1998 through 2002, Agnes Martin’s ninetieth year. Interviews with Martin are inter-cut with shots at work in her studio in Taos, New Mexico, with photographs and archival footage, and with images of her work from over five decades. It is a venue for Martin to speak about her work, her working methods, her life as an artist, and her views about the creative process. She also discusses her film, “Gabriel” and reads from her poetry and lectures. In keeping with Martin’s chosen life of solitude, she alone appears in the documentary.
An Evening of Yoga and Art

So popular the first time, we’ve added another one! This two hour event begins with a 50 minute Vinyasa Yoga Flow class that takes place on the lawn between the Cantor Arts Center and the Anderson Collection at Stanford. Following the class, Sheryl Nonnenberg, a Yoga Alliance-certified instructor, art researcher/writer and former collection manager of the Anderson Collection will lead an informal tour through the galleries. The evening will end with a quiet meditation seated in front of Robert Irwin’s mesmerizing sculpture, Untitled. Participants should have prior yoga experience and come prepared with a yoga mat. Yoga attire is recommended.

In the late 1940s and 50s, Mark Rothko (1903-70) was one of the leading American artists who created wall-scale abstract paintings that filled the viewer’s field of vision and became a form of environment. Together with painters such as Clyfford Still, he wanted to express a sense of the sublime, an idea associated with religious awe, vastness and natural magnificence.
This documentary chronicling Rothko’s life explores his visual language with contributions from his daughter and son, friends, artists, art historians, collectors and curators.
Strings in the Galleries: A Performance by the St. Lawrence String Quartet

Established in 1989, the St. Lawrence String Quartet has developed an undisputed reputation as one of the world’s great ensembles. Called “witty, buoyant, and wickedly attentive” (The Gazette, Montreal), with a “peerless” sense of ensemble (Financial Times, London), the quartet is celebrated for its “smoldering intensity” (Washington Post), and “flexibility, dramatic fire and… hint of rock ‘n’ roll energy” (LA Times). SLSQ performs around the world and has served as Ensemble-in-Residence at Stanford University since 1998.

ArtsRoll With Cantor Arts Center, Stanford Live, and the Arts Institute

The Arts Institute, the Anderson Collection, the Cantor Arts Center, and Stanford Live present “Arts Roll,” a celebration of another year as part of Stanford’s vibrant arts district. The four organizations join together to host a student party featuring an outdoor roller-skating rink; hands-on art making activities; open galleries at the Cantor and Anderson Collection; live music by student artists, Camp Youth and the Percs and an exhibition of student art work produced as the result of the Arts Institute program, MashUp. As a counterpoint to Party on the Edge, students can explore the variety of opportunities the Stanford arts district has to offer, sign up for student memberships, explore the collections, all while celebrating the end of another year of dynamic arts programming on campus.

Through intimate interviews, art, and rarely seen archival film and video footage, Lynn Hershman Leeson’s !Women Art Revolution reveals how the Feminist Art Movement fused free speech and politics into an art that radically transformed the art and culture of our times.
Following the film will be a panel discussion featuring the filmmaker, Lynn Hershman Leeson; Moira Roth, Feminist Art Historian and critic (Mills College); Jennifer DeVere Brody, chair of Theater and Performance Studies at Stanford; Pamela Lee, Professor of Art History at Stanford, Camille Utterback, Assistant Professor of Art Practice at Stanford and Tammy Rae Carland, artist and chair of photography at CCA.

Crisscrossing the World: Los Angeles Artists and the Global Imagination, 1960-1980 with Kellie Jones

Dr. Jones is a professor of Art History & Archaeology and the Institute for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University. Her research interests include African American and African Diaspora artists, Latino/a and Latin American Artists, and issues in contemporary art and museum theory.
Dr. Jones has worked as a curator for over three decades and has numerous major national and international exhibitions to her credit. Her exhibitions have been named as “one of the best exhibitions” of 2011, 2012, and 2014 by Artforum, as well as “best thematic shows nationally” by the International Association of Art Critics in 2011. She is the co-curator of Witness: Art and Civil Rights in the 1960s which celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, currently on view at the University of Texas, Austin.

Guest Artist Talk: Poet, Elizabeth Alexander

Professor Elizabeth Alexander is a poet, essayist, playwright, and teacher. She holds degrees from Yale University (B.A., English), Boston University (MFA, English), and the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D., English). In 2009, she composed and delivered “Praise Song for the Day” for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. She has written six books of poems, two collections of essays, and a play. Her book of poems, American Sublime (2005), was one of three finalists for the Pulitzer Prize and was one of the American Library Association’s “Notable Books of the Year.” Her play, “Diva Studies” (1996) was produced at the Yale School of Drama.
Come hear Elizabeth Alexander speak on the idea of ancestry in African American arts.

Celebrate the expansion of Stanford’s Arts District with Stanford Live at our Modern Jazz Showcase and open house! Start your evening at the newly opened Anderson Collection at Stanford University, where you’ll view one of the world’s most outstanding assemblies of American modern and contemporary art, while a Stanford student combo plays jazz outside. Afterwards, join a parade led by the Bourbon Kings Brass Band down Museum Way. Finish off the night at a Bing Concert Hall patio party with the Marcus Shelby Quartet.
