Legendary Katherine Dunham in residency at Stanford’s Dance Division

A legendary figure in the history of American modern dance, Katherine Dunham spent nearly a month at Stanford in May of 1989. The residency included academic courses, community outreach classes, and campus and public events.

Dunham was an anthropologist, social activist, educator, and writer in addition to a dancer and choreographer who ran her own company (the Katherine Dunham Dance Company) for over thirty years. As a dancer she appeared on Broadway and in and a number of films, including the black cinema classic Stormy Weather.
