Stanford University to Unveil Interdisciplinary Arts Gym in 2016

The art department at Stanford University has been looking to its athletics programs for artistic inspiration and in early 2016 it will unveil a brand new arts facility called the Arts Gym. The multi-purpose space has been specifically designed to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and student-driven projects and is modeled after similar facilities meant for athletic training and team building.

Proposed by Stanford students, the open design of the new building is meant to promote creativity, learning, and motivation based on peer progress and a community atmosphere. Renovation of the Roble Gym, designed by Cody Anderson Wasney, will convert the former athletics facility and current home for the drama and dance departments’ offices into an open floor plan with rehearsal and performance areas, art storage, and an art studio.

Along with the Arts Gym, the university has introduced a new requirement for all undergraduates to take a class in the arts.
