"Scholarships shape this community. This is who we are."

Harry Elam, the Freeman-Thornton Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Olive H. Palmer Professor in the Humanities, and Bass University Fellow in Undergraduate Education, reflected on the importance of scholarships at a dinner in April. The event brought together donors who have endowed scholarship funds at Stanford as well as students who benefit from this support.

"Tonight, we celebrate the power of gifts—both the donors' generosity and the gifts the recipients bring to this institution by their presence," Elam said.

Endowed scholarship funds have supported nearly 50,000 individual students at Stanford. Today, nearly half of all Stanford undergraduates depend on scholarships from the university.
