Sarah (Sally) M. Horwitz

Dr. Horwitz is an international authority on the epidemiology of mental health disorders in childhood, an arena of research that is emerging as central to child health policy deliberations and reform. She is also recognized as a national leader in medical and public health education having served in a variety of senior positions with responsibility for training in epidemiology, health services evaluation, and translational research.

Dr. Horwitz's breadth of expertise is reflected in her previous joint position as Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Pediatrics at the Case School of Medicine. Prior to her arrival at Case in 2003, Dr. Horwitz was Head of the Division of Health Policy and Administration, in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, at the Yale University School of Medicine.

As a classically trained epidemiologist with a background in psychology and education, Dr. Horwitz was among the first to bring rigorous analytic methods to the study of psychosocial influences on the functional outcomes of vulnerable children. Dr. Horwitz has also been a leader in transforming her research into improved pediatric practice and policies. As a leader in the American Academy of Pediatrics Behavioral Research Consortium, Dr. Horwitz helped develop a method for assessing obstacles to the identification and management of psychosocial disorders in children. Dr. Horwitz's unusual ability to link rigorous analytic methodologies to applications in the real world is highly prized by public agencies and professional organizations across the country and she is frequently sought out as a consultant and advisor to major public initiatives to improve mental health services for children.

Dr. Horwitz has long been committed to medical education and has developed and directed a variety of highly successful training programs. In these positions, Dr. Horwitz supervised the training of medical and public health professionals at a variety of levels and across a range of disciplines and is recognized as a highly committed and successful mentor and excellent teacher.
