Expanded Opportunities in Forensic Psychiatry

In January 2003, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences established the Center for Psychiatry and the Law.

The mission of the Center is:

To Educate students, faculty, and staff of Stanford University, as well as the community at-large, about the increasingly important relationship between psychiatrists, psychologists, attorneys and the courts.

To Provide resources and support to the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in their research projects, as well as in their work with legal professionals.

To Ensure that clinical expertise is applied in a balanced manner to the evaluation of mental health questions in a legal context.

To Offer the community access to experts who are able to form balanced and informed expert opinions on various medical issues.

To Facilitate dialogue between legal and mental health professionals both in the classroom and the community.
