Festivals
There are many beautiful areas in San Jose that are perfect to conduct a large public festival or event. Festivals may include exhibitions, concerts, movie nights, carnivals and Farmers’ Markets and may be held at city parks, streets, paseo/plazas, private property or City Hall. Amplification will be limited according to venue regulations and/or zoning requirements.
In addition to any venue use fees, additional permits and/or inspections (depending on selected event activities and use of temporary structures) may be required from the Fire Department, Police Department, Transportation and County Health Department, etc.
Festivals are an occasion for celebration often with cultural performances, exhibitions, competitions and food.

| A live performance, typically of music before an audience. The performance may be by a single musician or by a musical ensemble, such as an orchestra, a choir, or a musical band. Concerts are held in a wide variety of settings from small paseos to large stages placed in our largest parks with room for thousands of people. Regardless of the venue, concerts often require live event support with professional audio equipment. |
| A showing of a motion picture or series of short films or cartoons in an outdoor setting typically in a park, parking lot or other similar public space. Movie nights are held to foster community spirit and to encourage interaction between neighbors or persons of similar interest. Movie nights can be sponsored by neighborhood community groups or other organizations. Movie nights are sometimes held as a part of a larger outdoor special event |
| A traveling midway or show, with riders and amusements for public participation. Carnivals can be held on downtown paseos, public streets, private property such as a church school or mall parking lot. A Regulatory Permit is required for Carnivals. This permit requires multiple City Department approvals; a lead time of three weeks prior to the first event day is required to acquire this permit. |
| A market where fresh produce and products are sold directly by farmers to consumers. In California, a Farmers’ Market has to be “certified” in order to operate. Farmers' Markets require specific coordination with the County of Santa Clara, Department of Environmental Health Consumer Protection Division. |
