MELODY (Music Enrichment Learning Development on Developing Youth) is a volunteer organization based at Stanford University, partnering with John Gill Elementary School in Redwood City. Started in 1998 as a part of the Stanford Alliance for Service Through the Arts, MELODY has grown to include approximately twelve Stanford tutors per year, serving roughly fifteen to twenty elementary school students. The group offers free private lessons and music theory tutoring to students.
Our goal is not only to offset budget cuts for art programs in schools and other institutions, but also to establish healthy mentoring relationships between tutors and tutees and encourage tutees to pursue higher education in the future. Of course, we have a great time while teaching, and we make valuable friendships along the way!
Stanford students drive over to John Gill several times a quarter on Saturday mornings, between 10:15 am and 11:30 am. There are two sessions during each morning: thirty minutes of private lessons and thirty minutes of group music theory. Students are split into sessions based on experience and age, although some exceptions may apply due to the limited number of tutors.
