Stanford’s location on the San Francisco Peninsula governs its summer weather pattern. In the immediate campus area, the summer norm calls for cool mornings and nights, with warmer days and evenings. Program outings to San Francisco will expose students to much cooler weather, so it’s important to pack some sweatshirts and a jacket to have on hand when the temperature drops. In general, rain is minimal at most, and humidity is low to non-existent.
Campus life is casual, with shorts, t-shirts and sandals being the typical student dress code during the day. Evening events may require slightly dressier attire such as skirts or dress slacks with blouses or sweaters for women, and slacks and polos, dress shirts, or sweaters for men.

* All rooms are equipped with an extra-long twin bed, desk, desk chair, and dresser for each student. Pillows, bed linens, and towels are not provided. An alternative to bringing pillows, bed linens, and towels for the summer is to purchase these items in the local community. On Welcome Weekend there will be limited free bus service available to take students to local shopping areas. Items may then be donated to charity at the end of the Summer Quarter.
** Computers are available in the computer clusters in the residence as well as at several clusters around campus. Students are encouraged to bring their own computer if they have one and it is easy to pack. For students who need to print documents while on campus, Stanford sells copy cards at cash-to-card machines located around campus. Cash-to-card machines are available at the Lathrop and Green Libraries, as well as the Lair on the second floor of the Tresidder Student Union.
San Francisco and San Jose International Airports provide the most convenient service to the Stanford campus. San Francisco’s airport (SFO) is approximately 30 to 40 minutes north by car; San Jose’s airport (SJC) is approximately 30 minutes south. Students should check flights into both airports to find the best times and prices.
The Summer Session Office is unable to offer scheduled transportation to and from the airport; however, there are several public and private means of transportation available. The following options are offered at both the San Jose and San Francisco airports:
All confirmed residential students will be sent detailed move-in instructions via email before the start of Summer Quarter.
Residential Students: If you submitted your ID card photo by May 24, you will receive your Stanford ID card upon check-in during Welcome Weekend. If you did not submit your ID card photo by May 24, you can pick up your Stanford ID card at the Student Services Center, located on the second floor of Tresidder Memorial Union, starting Monday, June 20. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Be sure to bring a government-issued photo ID with you. Students in this situation will be given a temporary card to access the residences and dining halls for the weekend.
Commuting Students: If you submitted your ID card photo by May 24, you can pick up your Stanford ID card at the mandatory orientation on Sunday, June 19. If you did not submit your ID Card photo by May 24, you can pick up your Stanford ID Card at the Student Services Center, located on the second floor of Tresidder Memorial Union, starting Monday, June 20.
Stanford Summer Session requires international students to have a visa appropriate for academic study, which in most cases, is an F-1 student visa. Summer Session students are not allowed to enter the country using a Tourist Visa (B-1/B-2) or WT/WB Visa Waiver.
Students who have been issued a Stanford ID number need to submit an Annulment of Summer Registration Form by emailing or faxing the document to the Summer Session Office if they find they can no longer attend the program. International students who have been issued a Stanford-sponsored I-20 must also return their I-20 to the Summer Session Office immediately.
If a student notifies us of his or her change in plans on or before the first day of classes on June 20, 2016, all course-related University charges will be eliminated. However, students who have applied for housing will still have housing-related cancellation fees, which are defined within the housing application and contract. NOTE: The submission of an Annulment of Summer Registration Form does not cancel a housing and meal plan assignment. See “How do I terminate my housing contract?” for information.
If a student notifies us of his or her change in plans on or after June 20, 2016, non-refundable fees may be charged to their account. See the FAQ “I am attending Summer Session, but need to withdraw early. What do I do?” for more information.
Students need to submit an Annulment of Summer Registration Form to the Summer Session Office immediately. Refunds are calculated on a per diem basis starting on the first day of instruction for the Summer Quarter. Tuition is charged on a daily basis (including weekends and holidays) through the first 60% of the quarter. The Tuition Refund Schedule is available on the Office of the University Registrar website (the dollar amounts shown on this schedule apply to students taking a full-time course load). If withdrawal occurs after the first 60% of the quarter has passed, students are liable for the full amount of the tuition they were charged.

Students who have accepted a housing assignment need to cancel their housing application in Axess. Please refer to your Housing Agreement for information about terminating your contract. In addition, more information is available at the Summer Housing website. Housing fees will apply if a student withdraws from the Summer Quarter after accepting their housing assignment.
Students move out of residence according to the terms stated on their housing agreement. For students enrolled as part of the standard eight-week summer term, move out day is Sunday, August 14 by 8 a.m. For students enrolled in a nine-week course, move out day is Saturday, August 20 by 8 a.m. Additional fees will apply for late departure. Students may also move out of residence before these dates, depending on their final exam schedule and personal travel needs.
