Iraq
AMIDEAST established
one of its first field offices in Baghdad, Iraq in 1953.
Until its closure in 1967, in the wake of heightened regional
tensions, the Baghdad office played a vital role in strengthening
mutual understanding and cooperation between Americans and
Iraqis and in promoting U.S. higher education.
After a 36-year hiatus, AMIDEAST opened its doors in Iraq
in January 2004. Now we serve all of Iraq from a field office
in the northern city of Erbil until the security situation
permits the reopening of the country office in Baghdad.
At this time, we have two representatives in Baghdad and
one in Basra to help AMIDEAST cover the country with its
programs and services.
AMIDEAST looks forward to once again building bridges of
understanding between Iraqis and Americans and to forming
a partnership with all Iraqis in the reconstruction of their
country. Among the services AMIDEAST will soon offer in
Iraq are English language and skills training and institutional
development programs. AMIDEAST now offers many educational
exchange opportunities. AMIDEAST promotes, recruits, and
selects Iraqi students for the annual Youth Exchange and
Study (YES) Program and other scholarship and training programs
sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau
of Educational and Cultural Affairs. In addition, AMIDEAST/Iraq
administers many of the standardized tests required for
U.S. university admission, including TOEFL, GRE General
Test, and the GRE Subject Tests. AMIDEAST/Iraq also administers
ITP TOEFL and TOEIC tests.
We will be updating this page frequently as additional
information becomes available about AMIDEAST Iraq and its
training, testing, and scholarship programs. For further
