Two injured as massive blaze engulfs San Francisco residential building

Two people were injured in a massive blaze that engulfed a three-story duplex two blocks from the Panhandle in San Francisco on Monday morning, the San Francisco Fire Department said.

One person jumped from the building on the 700 block of Masonic Avenue to escape flames and has moderate injuries; another person who was escorted from the building has minor injuries, Lt. Mariano Elias, a public information for the fire department, told SFGATE. 

The three-alarm fire was first reported to the SFFD at approximately 3:20 a.m. The blaze spread rapidly and damage to the duplex is significant. 

"The roof and floor collapsed," Elias said. "This building is probably going to be demolished, it’s bad."

Elias said flames spread to the buildings on either side of the duplex and damage to these buildings was moderate.

Seven people have been displaced. 

Masonic was closed between Hayes and Fulton to traffic and could be shut down to traffic into the afternoon. Elias said a fire engine will remain on site with firefighters keeping an eye out for hot spots that could lead the fire to erupt again.

People are advised to the avoid the area and find alternative routes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
