In this course, we will learn about basic drawing tools
(pencil, pen, sumi ink and brush, and charcoal) and
explore a variety of techniques such as crosshatching,
gesture, gradation, and blending. We will also explore
various kinds of subject matter, including still life,
landscape, drapery, and abstraction, and cover the
fundamentals of composition, contrast, and shading.
One-on-one and group discussions will touch upon
concepts crucial to the creative process, including
critical thinking, discipline, spontaneity, and repetition.
Technical demonstrations, slide lectures, and short
writing projects will complement our studio work. The
goal of this course is to give students the basic tools and
ideas necessary to begin their own drawing practice.
This course is designed for beginners and those with
minimal drawing experience.
Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course
and can expect to spend an additional $45–$65 on these
materials.
This course may not be taken for a Letter Grade.
This course includes a non-refundable model fee of $5 to be paid at the time of registration.

Trevor Tubelle shows his drawings, paintings, prints, and hybrid projects throughout the Bay Area. His work is included in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Tubelle received an MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute.Textbooks for this course:
