Chinese brush painting is one of the oldest living arts in the world. Rooted in a rich tradition of more than 5,000 years, it is a fascinating and unusual art form. Each brush stroke is a defining move that cannot be corrected. More often than not, the simplicity of a Chinese painting belies the complex and demanding process that the artist went through to produce it.

This course introduces students to the philosophy, concepts, fundamental techniques, materials, and composition of Chinese brush painting. The course will focus on learning the basic brush strokes through the “Four Gentlemen” of Chinese art: the bamboo, orchid, plum blossom, and chrysanthemum. The application of these brush strokes to various other subjects will also be explored. There will be a class art exhibit toward the end of the course.

Felix Chan Lim, Artist

Felix Lim has participated in more than 120 art exhibits and has conducted more than ninety lectures and painting workshops on Chinese brush painting over the past three and a half decades. He was an associate professorial lecturer in painting for ten years, and his paintings are in private collections around the world.

Betty "Bobbi" Makani-Lim, Artist

Bobbi Makani-Lim has co-taught Chinese brush painting with Felix Chan Lim for many years, and has assisted in the organization of several Chinese-painting exhibits. She has been actively involved in developing teaching methods and courses related to Chinese culture and the arts.
