This course continues our introduction to playing the acoustic guitar. Building on the course offered in the Winter quarter, we will add slightly more complex chords and accompaniments to folk and popular songs, including works by Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and Neil Young. We will continue to use first-position (open) chords, and barre chords will be introduced. For the right hand, our study will include alternating bass finger-picking patterns and rhythm playing using a pick. We will continue our study of elementary music reading using standard musical notation, and we will also discuss how to read guitar tablature. During the last few class meetings, students will form small groups and play easy ensemble pieces together.
Students should have facility with first-position chords and some experience playing with pick and fingers. Completion of the Continuing Studies course “Introduction to the Acoustic Guitar” (MUS 162) or its equivalent elsewhere is strongly recommended.
Lisa Sanchez, Instructor, Gryphon Stringed Instruments
Lisa Sanchez has taught basic music and guitar at SF State. She studied jazz guitar with Warren Nunes, and voice with jazz vocalist Mark Murphy. Sanchez has extensive experience as a vocalist and a freelance professional jazz and pop guitarist. She performs regularly and is working on a new album.Textbooks for this course:
