CREDIT & GRADES

Credit

Continuing Studies Courses are offered only for the number of units listed. Most courses may be taken for credit. Some exceptions apply. Credit cannot be received for courses with no unit, and specialized team-taught courses are not always available for Credit. (Please refer to specific course descriptions for details.)

Credits cannot be applied toward any Stanford degree. Credits will be recorded on your transcript, and you might be able to transfer the credits to another university, subject to that university's policies.

Continuing Studies courses carry Continuing Education Units (CEU's), not undergraduate/graduate credits.  Generally, 10 hours in the classroom are equal to one Continuing Education Unit.

Please note, if you select the No Grade Requested (NGR) grading option for any course, the course will not appear on official transcripts nor on grade reports, and no credits will be awarded.

Grades

Students have three grading options for Continuing Studies courses:
  • Letter Grade (A, B, C, D, No Pass) - written work is required
  • Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) - attendance and participation (as determined by the instructor) is required
  • No Grade Requested (NGR) - no work is required; no credit shall be received; no proof of attendance can be provided. (Not suitable for those requiring proof of attendance/completion.)

Students who have selected the Letter Grade option must turn in their assignments by the instructor’s deadline. If extenuating circumstances arise, a student may request to take an “Incomplete” only if the instructor agrees to accept and grade the assignment at a later date. The student and the instructor must agree upon a firm deadline, but this should be no later than three weeks after the last class session. If the work is not completed by the deadline, the instructor will give Credit (CR) if appropriate, or default to No Grade Requested (NGR).

Please note: Written assignments may not be suitable for all Continuing Studies courses, such as one-day workshops or practice-based courses such as art studio. In these cases, grading options are limited to CR/NC or NGR. The instructor determines the participation criteria for the credit awarded, based on the subject matter and format of the course.

Students are required to select a grading option during the registration process.

In most cases, you may also change your grade option any time before the last class meeting. There are two exceptions when grade options may not be switched: If signing a weekly attendance sheet or checking in with an attendance monitor is required, students may not switch from NGR to Credit after the second class session. Furthermore, if an instructor requires mid-quarter work from Letter Grade students, then one cannot switch to a Letter Grade option late in the quarter.  To change your grade option, you must notify the Continuing Studies office, in writing, in one of the following ways:

  • Online: Login to change your grade option from the Student Home page
  • Email: Send an email to: continuingstudies@stanford.edu
  • Postal Mail: Mail your preference in writing to Stanford Continuing Studies, 365 Lasuen Street, Littlefield Center, Stanford, CA 94305-5005 (For those without computer access, written notification via postal mail will also be accepted.)
Select your grading option carefully. If you require proof that you completed a Continuing Studies course for any reason (for example, employer reimbursement), you must choose either the Letter Grade or Credit/No Credit option. Courses taken for NGR will not appear on official transcripts nor on grade reports. You cannot change grading options after you complete a course.

Grades are viewable and printable via your online student account. Please allow up to three weeks after a course has ended to view grades online.
