Handa Center Annual Public Lecture on International Justice
Having made landmark contributions to the development of international criminal law, Judge Fausto Pocar will address the future of the international justice enterprise at a critical juncture. In his 30-year association with the United Nations, Pocar currently serves as an Appeals Judge (since 2000) of the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and for Rwanda. He formerly served as President of the ICTY, and has presided over numerous Yugoslavian and Rwandan cases. Pocar served for 16 years in the UN Human Rights Committee under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, including as Chairman. Further, he served as Special Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for visits to Chechnya and the Russian Federation during the first conflict in 1995-1996. Pocar is Professor Emeritus of International Law, former Dean and Vice-Rector at the University of Milan, and serves as President of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law.
