By leveraging and exploring the affordances of digital tools and technology, VPTL supports the development of projects that serve as catalysts for effective and inspiring transformations in face-to-face, online, and blended learning, and that have broad impact at Stanford and beyond.
VPTL's comprehensive, multidimensional approach to advancing Digital Learning is driven by robust and iterative collaborations across its specialized teams.
VPTL’s Digital Learning Strategy group, comprised of the Digital Learning Design team and the Academic Technology Solutions Lab, collaborates with faculty throughout Stanford's schools and research centers to spur innovation and develop new and effective digital learning content and activities delivered on campus, or to learners around the world.
The Digital Learning Design team provides collaborative instructional design consultation with faculty to design, develop, and deliver online and blended learning experiences.
Serving as a resource center for faculty, instructors and teaching assistants, the Academic Technology Solutions Lab provides consultation and equipment to support the use of technology to improve teaching, learning and research at Stanford.
The Media Creation and Production team offers a broad range of audio and video services to help faculty create multimedia content. In particular, the team supports and assists instructors in:
- Evaluating different production styles to meet learning objectives
- Capturing lectures and learning modules in our studios, in the classroom, and in some cases, in locations on and off campus
- Editing multimedia content
- Encoding audio and videos with optimal delivery specifications
The Engineering & Production group evaluates and supports digital learning environments such as online course delivery platforms. This group runs and builds features for Lagunita, the next-generation open-source learning platform as well as oversees the Canvas learning management system.
In addition, the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning has broad responsibility for designing, operating and sustaining Stanford’s population of about 185 general assignment classrooms and about 100 other technology-rich learning spaces in key central locations (e.g. Lathrop Library, Old Union) and student residences.
The Learning Environments group helps faculty find the right spaces on campus for the kind of teaching they want to do. The team strives to connect classroom tools and technology with course and curricular goals.
