The rocket men and their breathtaking invention
It’s a gadget straight out of Star Trek — a breath analyzer that may someday quickly and noninvasively detect everything from diabetes to cancers. In a new Stanford Medicine magazine story, you can read about how three Stanford rocket-combustion experts — Christopher Strand, Victor Miller and Mitchell Spearrin — designed and tested a device to measure toxic ammonia levels in critically ill children. This project was supported by the Spectrum/SPADA pilot grant program.

Novel use of internet for microbiome study patient recruitment
The Spectrum-supported Autism Microbiome study aims to unravel the impact of microbiome and genome variation on Autism Spectrum Disorder. To help recruit research participants from around the country, Dennis Wall’s team of translational bioinformaticians have created a friendly, educational website.

Early-career awards fast track studies on poverty and health
Juggling her duties as a clinician and an instructor in family medicine, Rita Hamad, MD, MPH, is closer than ever to her goal of a research career, with the help of Spectrum’s KL2 mentored career development award. Hamad is interested in studying the cause-and-effect relationships between poverty and health.

Record number trained in clinical trial research bootcamp
Spectrum trained 56 residents and junior faculty members at its week-long Intensive Course in Clinical Research in September. This is the largest ICCR graduating class ever, and participants left this immersive experience with a deeper understanding of clinical research, study design, biostatistics, informatics, regulatory issues and bioethics. The next course will be held in 2016.

Call for METRICS postdoctoral fellowship applications
The Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS) is a research-to-action center focused on transforming research practices to improve the quality of scientific studies in biomedicine and beyond. The Center invites applications for postdoctoral fellowship positions in the broad areas of meta-research here. They are due on Dec. 15.
Call for KL2/TL1 career development applications
Applications for the Spectrum KL2 and TL1 clinical-research mentored career development training awards are due on March 1, 2016. Both programs provide promising scholars with financial support, training and mentoring to help them initiate research that accelerates the translation of medical discoveries into better health. Junior faculty and senior fellows are encouraged to apply.
Call for Community Health Symposium poster abstracts

New global health concentration for Epidemiology & Clinical Research masters candidates
Spectrum has just launched a global health track for masters candidates. In addition to completing the core courses required for an MS degree in epidemiology, students can receive a Global Health Concentration designation by completing these requirements.

Lisa Jackson, JD, RN, is the new Spectrum executive director of administration, who has been managing day-to-day operations of Spectrum since July. She brings a broad range of organizational, administrative and leadership skills to her new position, as well as hands-on experience in “Lean” quality process improvements. She previously served as executive director of the Translational Research Institute at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. As a new Californian, she’s currently enjoying the diversity of cultural events at Stanford and single scull rowing on the SF Bay.

Harry Greenberg, MD, Spectrum director and professor of medicine and of microbiology and immunology, has received the 2015 Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievements in Medical Research for an Alumnus from the Columbia Univ. College of Physicians and Surgeons. In addition, Greenberg recently presented the annual National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Robert M. Chanock Memorial Lecture on “Innate and acquired immunity to rotavirus: New mechanisms and old tricks.”

Steven Goodman, MD, MHS, PhD, professor of medicine and of health research and policy, associate dean for clinical and translational research and co-founder/co-director of the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford, has been named the 2016 Spinoza Chair in Medicine at the University of Amsterdam. Goodman will be in residence at the university for a week next May giving master classes on the foundation of scientific and statistical reasoning, as well as lecturing on the causes of and cures for the current crisis in research reproducibility.

New FDA case study on bringing drugs to market
The food and drug administration has posted a 30-page educational case study on the end-to-end process of getting a new drug from clinical testing to FDA approval. It also includes proposed student activities and questions for class discussion.

Spectrum has developed a number of online courses to help educate researchers on important aspects of study design, biostatistics, bioethics, science writing and regulatory knowledge.

Software tools for data mining disparate medical databases
A Stanford biomedical data science team has released an open-source set of software tools to help biomedical researchers extract and combine information from heterogeneous database environments without aggregating patient-level data. These will enable teams to overcome common challenges to collaboration, such as standardization of ontologies, patient privacy and data access control.
