Dr. Sonenberg is James McGill Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and the McGill Cancer Center at McGill University, Canada. He was an HHMI international research scholar from 1997 to 2011.

Current Research

Translational Control in Health and Disease

Nahum Sonenberg is conducting research on the mechanism and control of translation initiation in eukaryotes in health and disease. He is investigating the role that translational control plays in development; learning and memory; microRNA function; and the dysregulation of translation in cancer, autism, neurodegenerative disease, and virus infections.

Nahum Sonenberg joined McGill University in 1979 and is currently James McGill Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and the Goodman Cancer Research Centre. He received a PhD in biochemistry at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and joined the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in Nutley, New Jersey, with a Chaim Weizmann postdoctoral fellowship. Dr. Sonenberg was awarded the Robert L. Noble Prize from the National Cancer Institute of Canada in 2002, the Killam Prize for Health Sciences in 2005, the Katharine Berkan Judd Award from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2007, the Roche Diagnostics Award in 2007, the Gairdner International Award in 2008, the CIHR Health Researcher of the Year Award in biomedical and clinical research in 2009, the Centenary Award of the Biochemical Society (UK) in 2011, and the Lewis S. Rosenstiel Award for Distinguished Work in Basic Medical Science in 2012. He was also named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2010. Dr. Sonenberg is an elected member of the Royal Society of Canada, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Royal Society of London.
