Engagement is fundamental to the human experience of music, yet remains challenging to define, quantify, and bring about. This one-day symposium brings together academic and industry researchers in music, neuroscience, cognitive science, and engineering, with the aim of broadening discussions and advancing research on musical engagement. Speakers include Jacek Dmochowski (City College of New York), Douglas Eck (Google), Blair Kaneshiro (Stanford University), and Sageev Oore (Saint Mary's University (Canada)/Google). Talks will be followed by a poster session featuring current CCRMA research. Lunch will be provided.

The program includes the Youtube voice/electronic fascination HypnoDomme, the glottal extravaganza Fry on Fry, LALA Circus—a bizarre futuristic cabaret and solos on the fringe. Improvisatory and virtuoso, playful and emotionally charged, the troubadour band explores the sonic landscapes on the move.

In 1991 Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart teamed up with anthropologist and sound artist Steven Feld to produce Voices of the Rainforest. In one hour, the CD condenses 24 hours of sounds of the Bosavi rainforest and its Kaluli inhabitants in central Papua New Guinea. The CD reached multiple audiences concerned with interspecies art, experimental field recording, acoustic ecology, and cultural survival, and is still in circulation through Smithsonian Folkways. Over the last year and a half Feld has worked with Dennis Leonard at Skywalker Sound to recreate Voices of the Rainforest in the 7.1 cinema surround format, for acousmatic concerts, as well as indoor/outdoor museum and gallery installations.

Heather Bortfeld from UC Merced will be here to talk about Perceptual learning in support of language: Insights from infants and cochlear implantees

What does the brain know about sound when you are born deaf? There are well-established devices such as cochlear implants to give people the sensation of sound when their inner ear isn’t working. These devices work best when they are applied early. But what abilities are we born with, and how do we understand what these children are hearing, before they have language, or much of a behavioral system.
