A older person hears the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease and is devastated. Family hears it and is in denial. Everyone feels compelled to “do something” about dementia. They want to fight it. They want to make it go away or slow down or get better.

Pharmaceutical companies have capitalized on this urge and sell countless dollars worth of drugs that allegedly are for treatment of dementia. What they actually accomplish other than a mild temporary change in behavior for a relatively small number of people who take them is not at all certain. And there is a litany of potential side effects. Yet doctors continue to prescribe them. They likely want to “do something” too.
