Stanford Partners with Nature Conservancy, WWF to Address Ecosystem ServicesAn interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Stanford's Woods Institute for the Environment, The Nature Conservancy and the World Wildlife Fund is developing new systems and tools to quantify the value of ecosystem services, i.e., the contributions nature makes to human life, and to incorporate those values into decision-making.

New Program Links Scholars, Policy-makers on California Climate Change

The Woods Institute has developed an in-depth training program for mid-career scholars from Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley, and Davis. The goal is to improve the understanding, communications and connections between university researchers and Sacramento policy-makers focusing on climate change.

GCEP Announces Research Awards

institute newsGlobal Climate and Energy Project Director Franklin Orr Jr. announced awards totaling $1.15 million for two novel research programs and two exploratory research efforts that have been initiated at Stanford and outside the university. The new research activities are in the areas of biomass, advanced coal utilization and integrated assessment of biofuels.

Study Predicts Collapse of Ocean Fisheries

institute newsAll species of wild seafood will collapse within 50 years, according to a new study in the Nov. 3 issue of Science. Loss of marine biodiversity worldwide is profoundly reducing the ocean's ability to produce seafood. Stephen Palumbi, professor of biological sciences at Hopkins Marine Station and Woods Institute senior fellow, is co-author.
