The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality awarded $7,385,285 to four municipalities in northeast and central Louisiana. The municipalities were Urania in La Salle Parish ($1,581,643); West Monroe in Ouachita Parish ($4,750,000); Sicily Island in Concordia Parish ($525,992); and Clayton in Concordia Parish ($527,651). This represents the first four of the 55 awards that the department will be issuing.

Monroe-area residents are invited to attend the Department of Environmental Quality's Enviroschool on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. In November, DEQ, in partnership with the University of Louisiana Monroe Department of Toxicology, will present an Enviroschool workshop on Understanding Water Quality Issues. This workshop will provide an overview of the basics of understanding water quality and water quality protection including understanding nonpoint source pollution. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality will be installing electronic monitoring equipment in conjunction with a water sampling survey on Lower Tchefuncte River in St. Tammany Parish. The equipment will be installed from Nov. 3 to Nov. 6. The units will be located in Covington and Madisonville. The survey, originally scheduled for last week, was canceled due to poor water conditions.

Residents of the Coulee Baton Microwatershed have until Nov. 9 to apply for 90 percent reimbursement for the cost of repairing or replacing their home septic systems. The Vermilion Soil and Water Conservation District, the Acadiana Resource Conservation and Development Council and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality are offering this reimbursement.

United States Attorney David R. Dugas announced today
that FLITCHER R. BELL, age 43, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; DARRELL JOHNSON, age 48, of Bueche, Louisiana; and LEONARD P. JACKSON, age 45, of Prairieville, Louisiana, were charged in Bills of Information alleging that each accepted bribes in exchange for "fixing" criminal matters filed and pending in Baton Rouge City Court. When the DEQ Drinking Water Protection Team moved into LaSalle Parish, they formed a parish Drinking Water Protection Committee. The Drinking Water Protection Committees are groups of individuals that are dedicated to protecting their drinking water source from contamination and usually formed on a parish or watershed basis.
