Citizen Science is a vital fast-growing field in which scientific investigations are conducted by volunteers. Individuals and community groups have long collected data to better understand their local environment and address issues of concern to them. Over the past decade, there has been an explosion of citizen science projects as tools have advanced and people have become more empowered. These projects have been remarkably successful in expanding scientific knowledge, raising people’s awareness of their environment, and leveraging change.

The EPA Region 2 Citizen Science Program welcomes our citizen scientists in our effort to better understand and protect our environment. By involving the community and providing the tools to increase the quality of the data collected and assist in its interpretation, we can work together to achieve our common goals. Citizen science includes a wide range of environmental activities that citizens (or community groups) may initiate or engage. Many citizen science projects:
- Promote education and/or environmental stewardship through participation in field activities such as collecting environmental samples or documenting critical habitats.
- Focus on answering simple to complex environmental questions posed by citizens, scientific organizations (e.g., government agencies, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions), or by citizens and scientific organizations working together.
