Maggie Wells is a third year MD candidate and first year MPP (Masters in Public Policy) candidate at Stanford University. Her medical concentration lies in biomedical ethics and medical humanities. Maggie is currently active in the student group Medical Students for Choice and has partnered with Planned Parenthood Mar Monte to conduct a policy needs assessment and policy design project with the support of a Valley Fellowship through the Office of Community Health.
Maggie grew up in Orange County, California. She attended UCLA and received her B.S. in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology and her B.A. in Women's Studies. While in college she was active as a youth mentor (through Women and Youth Supporting Each Other) and an advocate for survivors of sexual violence (through Clothesline Project). She wrote her undergraduate thesis on the experiences of intersex individuals in the context of medical interventions and conducted genetics research on Drosophila melanogaster. She also planned UCLA's first ever Transgender Day of Remembrance. After graduating from UCLA, Maggie spent three years in the biotech industry, most recently working in R&D to develop novel point-of-care assays for determining blood platelet function. Maggie was awarded a fellowship from the Los Angeles chapter of the New Leaders Council Institute, a six month training program which prepares progressive young professionals to become the next generation of political entrepreneurs.
Maggie enjoys backpacking and traveling. She has traveled to Honduras on a medical mission trip, to rural Nepal for a three week backpacking trip around the Annapurna mountain range, and to Tibet and China for a clinical rotation in Traditional Tibetan Medicine.
