Honoring Environmental Heroes
Since 1999, EPA’s Pacific Southwest Environmental Awards program has celebrated individuals and groups who are working to protect public health and the environment. The winners this year represent a wide array of sectors and innovations, from protecting vernal pools to bringing environmental improvements to underserved urban communities.
Supporting Children’s Environmental Health
EPA grant funding of more than $350,000 has supported four organizations that address children’s environmental health in underserved communities. The grant recipients have been able to provide support to over 15,000 parents, child care providers, farm workers, and children.
Abandoned Boats Removed from Oakland Estuary
EPA, CalRecycle, the Coast Guard and other agencies have undertaken a multimillion-dollar cleanup in the Oakland Estuary. Abandoned and sunken vessels, marine debris, and other navigational hazards are being removed from numerous locations along the waterway, along with toxic materials such as heavy metals and asbestos.

Cupertino, Calif. – A Food Recovery Success Story
EPA has recognized the City of Cupertino for innovation in reducing food waste. Cupertino participated in the Food Recovery Challenge program to work with local grocers and markets to divert food waste from landfills, providing a model for other communities and grocers to follow.

Protecting People from Airborne Dust
EPA and the Department of Justice issued a civil penalty against Fisher Sand and Gravel for failing to comply with dust mitigation regulations at three of its Arizona facilities. The company is also required to take steps to minimize the generation of dust at its Phoenix plants.
