Teaching Resources

Sophomore College is committed to supporting an intensive learning experience for students and an exceptional teaching experience for faculty.

SoCo Faculty Resources

  • Faculty select two undergraduate or graduate students to serve as Sophomore College Assistants (SCA) to provide teaching and program support. SCAs live in program housing with their students, hold office hours in the dorm and provide additional out-of-class leadership.

  • Course supplies and enhancement funding is provided for guest speakers, field trips, film screens, presentation of students’ projects, and similar activities.

  • Funding is available for faculty to hire a student in the spring and/or summer to assist with curriculum development assistance.

  • September Studies staff supports all aspects of course administration including ordering books, arranging classrooms, and setting up field trips.

Enhancement Fund for Seminars Entirely On-Campus

Enhancement Funding

$2,000 is available to seminars without travel (travel is considered an enhancement). All requests for course-related materials, activity, or honorarium must be first submitted for approval before any action can be taken. Faculty can write direct to me or your SCAs have received training and have the forms to submit a request.

Transportation

If transportation is required, we will work to help determine the best mode of travel. While we will secure a bus if necessary, a round-trip generally is ~$800; Clipper Cards and Enterprise are half of that cost. Transportation is not deducted from your seminar enhancement fund; we do however, keep an eye on transportation expenses to gauge if the number of requested trips begins to move us into unsustainable territory.

  • We have Clipper Cards, which work for all Bay Area public transit.
  • We have an account with Enterprise (please do not use your own account); we will secure the reservation, and typically 7-passenger vans (minivans).
  • We have an account with Marguerite for a bus. Night travel will generally involve a bus rental.

Honorarium

Requests for honorarium must be submitted and approved prior to securing a guest speaker. The honorarium range is $100-$300; Stanford faculty and affiliates are not eligible to receive a monetary honorarium. As a rule, we do not provide transportation for guest speakers; your SCAs will be able to request and receive a parking permit for the speaker. We will need to know the expertise of the speaker, the activity with the class (lecture, workshop, etc.), and the length of time spent with the students. We encourage you/the SCAs to also consider if there is a memento that would be more meaningful than a monetary honorarium.

Meals

Faculty ID cards will be programmed to swipe at Arrillaga Dining Commons, and can be used to swipe in guest speakers.

If the class needs a meal while on a field trip, when possible please have your SCA arrange for a boxed meal; we know there were some issues last year with Dining and we are working with this unit to improve their service.

We know some field trips may include a restaurant that relates to your curriculum, and SCAs will be able to check out a PCard for this purpose; there are a limited number of PCards shared across SoCo and AI, so the earlier the request the better.

Please see maximum expense per meal per student, inclusive of tax and tip, below.  Itemized receipts must be turned in promptly.

  • Breakfast $15
  • Lunch $25
  • Dinner $45
