Biography

Based in Washington, D.C., Whitley Saumweber helps the Center for Ocean Solution (COS) strategically link scientific research to policy, and identify key leverage points and impact opportunities for work at the national policy level. Saumweber is investigating specific issues related to implementation of President Obama's National Ocean Policy, building on COS research on the human and ecological dimensions of ocean planning and ecosystem-based management.

Saumweber has worked in ocean science and policy for two decades. His goal is to improve the stewardship of our oceans and coasts by using science to support a more informed public discourse and improved public policy. He has extensive experience across the federal government, having worked in congress, the White House, and various agencies to lead and coordinate strategic ocean and coastal policy initiatives that engage a broad range of participants and stakeholders. He has worked as a research scientist and program manager with experience overseeing a national research and monitoring program and in environmental education and advocacy.
