McCarty Wins '07 Stockholm Water Prize

Perry L. McCartyPerry L. McCarty, Silas H. Palmer Professor of Civil Engineering and a pioneer in developing the understanding of biological and chemical processes for the safe supply and treatment of water, has been named the 2007 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate.

Food Crops Feel the Heat
as World Warms

Field CropsOver a span of two decades, warming temperatures caused annual losses of roughly $5 billion for major food crops, according to a study published March 16 in the online journal Environmental Research Letters.

Global Effort to Provide Poor
with Basic Sanitation Slow Going

Jenna DavisWorldwide, billions of people lack access to a reliable source of safe drinking water and basic sanitation facilities. To address the problem, the United Nations established the Target 10 initiative, which aims to halve by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.

Lovins Teaches Spring Class

As the 2006-2007 MAP/Ming Visiting Professor, Amory Lovins, CEO and co-founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute, will teach CEE 273R Energy End-Use Efficiencies at Stanford Univeristy, Wednesday evenings, Spring Quarter: http://www.stanford.edu/group/ews/mapming/ Students must register in advance for the course. Prerequisite: CEE 173L/273L: Advanced Energy End-Use Efficiency.

New Course 'Rethinks' International Health

In response to growing interest in international health, the Organization of International Health (OIH) and SUMMIT (Stanford University Medical Media and Information Technologies) have partnered to build an internet-enhanced course that will help to address this gap in Stanford course offerings.

Leopold Leadership Program
Seeks Applicants; Deadline: April 16

ALLPThe Woods Institute's Leopold Leadership Program is accepting applications for its 2008 fellowships targeted to mid-career academic environmental scientists. Up to 20 fellows from North America will be selected to participate in intensive training designed to provide scientists with skills and connections needed to be effective leaders and communicators. Deadline is April 16.

Goldman Honors Program
Applications Due April 20

The Goldman Interschool Honors Program in Environmental Science, Technology and Policy brings undergraduates from the schools of Humanities and Sciences, Engineering and Earth Sciences together into a small group seminar to analyze important environmental problems. The program combines a year-long research seminar, an honors thesis, an oral presentation of honors research and, where relevant, field study. All class years welcome to inquire.
