Over a span of two decades, warming temperatures caused annual losses of roughly $5 billion for major food crops, according to a study published March 16 in the online journal Environmental Research Letters. 
Worldwide, billions of people lack access to a reliable source of safe drinking water and basic sanitation facilities. To address the problem, the United Nations established the Target 10 initiative, which aims to halve by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.
The Woods Institute's Leopold Leadership Program is accepting applications for its 2008 fellowships targeted to mid-career academic environmental scientists. Up to 20 fellows from North America will be selected to participate in intensive training designed to provide scientists with skills and connections needed to be effective leaders and communicators. Deadline is April 16.
