Sustainable Wood Substitute Among the 100 Best Innovations of 2009
Popular Science magazine named a biodegradable substitute for wood developed by Senior Fellow Craig Criddle and Stanford colleague Sarah Billington one of "100 Best Innovations of 2009." Criddle and Billington began work on the "faux timber" after receiving a Woods Institute Environmental Venture Projects (EVP) grant.

Woods Institute Awards Five Mel Lane Student Program Grants
Five student group projects received Mel Lane Student Program Grants for fall 2009. Funded projects include a campus-wide sustainability competition and a bimonthly lecture series on the environment. Proposals for the next round of grants are due on Feb. 8, 2010.

Senior Fellow Paul Ehrlich Receives Major Environmental Award in Spain
Paul Ehrlich, professor of biology at Stanford, was given the 2009 Ramon Margalef Award for lifetime achievements in ecology from the government of Catalonia in Spain. He spoke to the Stanford Report prior to receiving the award.
