Call for 2012 Environmental Venture Project Letters of Intent
The Woods Institute for the Environment is pleased to request letters of intent (LOI) from Stanford faculty for the 2012 Environmental Venture Projects. The application process begins on Nov. 11 and ends on Jan. 9, 2012. While we continue to encourage faculty from different schools, departments, and independent labs to work together, we particularly wish to encourage participation by faculty from the social sciences and humanities, and from more junior faculty. LOIs must be submitted electronically by 11:59 pm PST Jan. 9, 2012.
WATER
Water and the California Economy
The Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment collaborated with the Public Policy Institute of California to host a workshop entitled “Water and the California Economy.” The goal of the workshop was to create a strategy for engaging California’s business community in issues related to California water resources. A white paper on findings from the workshop will be published by early next year.

LAND USE AND CONSERVATION
Mountain Lions at Jasper Ridge: Stanford Students Advise on Reserve Management
An upsurge in mountain lion photos last spring led the Jasper Ridge advisory committee to recommend a review of preserve policy. In June 2010, Jasper Ridge staff invited a group of students to serve as consultants on the review. The students were part of the Rising Environmental Leaders Program, a pilot project designed to give students an opportunity to participate in a real-world consulting experience.
CLIMATE
Urban Heat Island, White Roofs and Global Warming
How much influence these urban "heat islands" have on global warming has been a matter of debate. Now a study by Stanford researchers has quantified the contribution of the heat islands for the first time, showing that it is modest compared with what greenhouse gases contribute to global warming.

The Center on Food Security and the Environment held a symposium on October 6th as part of its Global Food Policy and Food Security Symposium series. The event featured Prabhu Pingali, Deputy Director of Agricultural Development at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Philip Pardey of the University of Minnesota.

Fisheries Leadership & Sustainability Forum
In September 2011, the Fisheries Leadership & Sustainability Forum hosted its west coast forum at Stanford University. Forum participants included members of the eight regional councils responsible for fisheries management and leadership. The forum focused on the topic of coastal and marine spatial planning and the role that the regional fishery management councils may play in multi-sector spatial planning.

Woods Institute 2012 DC Boot Camp
Stanford graduate students and postdocs are invited to apply now for a one-week hands-on program being held over spring break 2012 where you will learn the "do's and dont's" of funding your research and how to have impact in the policy environment of Washington DC.

Gretchen Daily Wins Prince Albert II Biodiversity Award
Gretchen Daily, the Bing Professor in Environmental Science, Natural Capital Project Director and senior fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment received the Biodiversity Award given annually by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. The Award includes 40,000 Euro to help support her work.
NEW YORK CITY SALON
New York City Salon
In early October, the Woods Institute hosted a salon in New York City. Faculty discussed their work on designing new approaches to solving global hunger and environmental problems related to agriculture and climate change, developing cost-effective, sustainable water supply and sanitation service delivery in developing countries, and protecting threatened marine life through marine spatial planning.
