Returns and Exchanges
When you have a change of circumstance and no longer need your current parking permit, act quickly to collect your prorated refund (if eligible), stop future payments, exchange permits easily, or begin receiving incentives for switching to sustainable transportation. Whatever your situation, do NOT throw your permit away.
How to return your permit
For ongoing Pre-Tax Payroll Deduction and recurring debits/charges associated with long term permits, you must return your permit by the end of the current month to avoid being charged for the next month’s deduction. For example, if a permit is returned Jan. 5, payments will stop Feb. 1.
For other forms of payment, you may be eligible to receive a prorated refund for monthly permits, depending on the day of the month you return your permit. To check the value of your permit, call Parking & Transportation Services (P&TS) at 650.723.9362.
How to exchange your permit
Visit P&TS and exchange your current permit for a new permit. P&TS will adjust the payments as necessary. If you are switching to sustainable transportation, we can help you apply for financial and other incentives if you are eligible.
Why to return your permit
Monthly and long term permits are non-transferable. Permits that are no longer in use must be returned to P&TS. Since permits are the property of Stanford University, active permits are considered stolen property if not returned.
Unexpired permits not returned within 30 days will be reported to the Department of Public Safety. Further use may result in citations, fines, charges, loss of future parking privileges, and/or legal action.

What to do if you sell your car
If you are replacing your car, your permit can be transferred from old to new. Remove and transfer your permit, then email P&TS at transportation@stanford.edu to provide us with your new car’s license plate or VIN.
If you are going car free, return your permit to stop future deductions or receive a pro-rated refund (if eligible). Do not include or sell your parking permit when you sell your car. If the permit is unexpired, it may be treated as Stanford's stolen property.
How to remove your non-transferable permit
-
Cover the back of the permit completely with Scotch tape to prevent shredding.
-
Using a thin, flat object, lift one corner of the permit. Start peeling up gently, working the tool under the permit until it is completely removed.
-
If there is residue, use rubbing alcohol to wipe it away.
