Cleaning Up in New England

EPA New England's Office of Site Remediation and Restoration (OSRR) administers the region's waste site cleanup and reuse programs. Use this web site to locate hazardous waste sites in New England, learn about EPA's cleanup programs, and get more information on a cleanup effort near you. Cleanup programs outlined in greater detail on this Web site include:

Superfund: EPA's Superfund program was established in1980 to locate, investigate, and clean up hazardous waste sites throughout the United States. EPA New England's Superfund program oversees long-term cleanups at National Priorities List (NPL) sites, short-term cleanups ("removal actions") and response to chemical and oil spill emergencies.

Brownfields: Brownfields are defined as real properties, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA's Brownfields Program provides funds and technical assistance to states, communities, and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together to assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields.

Corrective Action: Under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) program, facilities that treat, store, or dispose of hazardous wastes (TSDs) are required to clean up environmental contaminants at their sites. This cleanup at TSD facilities is termed RCRA Corrective Action.

Other Cleanup Programs: A number of other federal and state programs are active in assessing, cleaning up, and reusing waste sites; including underground storage tanks programs, oil spill prevention/response and, state-administered programs.
