For Stanford Travelers

Important

Important for the Stanford community is a change for those returning to Santa Clara County from travel outside the area. As of December 14, anyone who returns to Santa Clara County after traveling more than 150 miles away must quarantine for 10 days. The county recommends getting tested on day 6 or later and monitoring for any symptoms for 14 days. There is no longer an option to test out of quarantine after five days. For more information, see this announcement.

On this page, you will find information on travel advisory and guidance, what to do when you return to Stanford from travel, and links to frequently asked questions about business travel, cancellations and reimbursements.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends against travel during the holidays. Due to current shelter-in-place orders in effect, Stanford has reverted to Travel Phase 1, and no longer is reviewing travel exception requests. Travel exception requests submitted prior to the November 30, 2020 order will be reviewed after January 4, 2021 or after the shelter-in-place order has been lifted.

Current status

As of Jan. 29

  • For university-sponsored travel, Stanford has reverted to Travel Phase 1. All university-sponsored travel is suspended until further notice. Please note that the university’s travel restart procedures are separate from the campus reopening process.
  • Beginning January 4, 2021, Travel and Field Research Committees will only review travel exception requests related to essential research to destinations within 150 miles of Santa Clara County borders.
  • Travel exception requests associated with essential medical care will continue to be considered.
  • Individuals who have traveled 150 miles outside of Santa Clara County must quarantine for 10 days upon return. There no longer is a testing option to shorten this period. This Santa Clara County directive is now in effect “until rescinded or modified” by the county.
  • Students are following a modified protocol.
