The primary purpose of the Harry Press Stanford Daily Award is to enable current junior, sophomore, or freshman Stanford Daily staff to accept a summer journalism internship and either return to the Stanford Daily after completing the internship or continue working for the Daily during the internship.
The award honors Harry Press, ‘39, former Daily managing editor, longtime journalist and Stanford staff member, and former Stanford Daily Board member.
The award provides a stipend of $7500 for a summer journalism internship of at least 10 weeks.
Eligibility
- Demonstrated outstanding journalism skills on the Stanford Daily as a writer, editor, photographer or other editorial staff member, and intention to pursue a career in journalism.
- Current first year, sophomore, or junior.
- Internship offer from a newspaper, magazine, or broadcast journalism outlet.
Application Requirements
To arrange an internship, applicants should contact the editor or the person in charge of the journalism outlet’s internship program and provide the required application materials if applicable. Approved internship organizations include newspaper, magazine, and broadcast journalism outlets. Please contact the internship coordinator if you have questions.
Once the internship is secured and the terms are set, please apply for Harry Press Stanford Daily Award funding. A complete application will include an essay (500 words max) describing your reasons for pursuing a career in journalism, two samples of your work, internship start and end dates, and the internship supervisor’s name and contact information.
Preference is given to students on financial aid, though all eligible students, regardless of financial aid status, are welcome to apply. Applicants must indicate whether they qualify for Stanford financial aid or not. Applicants who qualify will be asked to give their permission for the Financial Aid Office to share information about their financial aid eligibility with the award coordinator in the Department of Communication so that we are able to confirm financial aid status.
Application (a login to Google with your Stanford email is required):
Stanford journalism faculty will make award decisions based on the required journalism skills cited above and the quality of the essay and work samples.
A contract email will be sent to the applicant and the internship supervisor listing the terms of the internship and asking for email agreement from both parties. The application process will be complete once both the intern and the internship supervisor have responded to the contract email confirming that they agree to its conditions.
The priority deadline for submitting an application for a summer 2021 internship award is May 1, 2021 (by 11:59PM). Applications submitted after May 1 will be considered on a rolling basis.
