EquatIO
Because this website uses an older two-step authentication method, when you download the software you might not see the updated version of the two-step authentication screens.
EquatIO is a math accessibility solution for those who prefer to listen to math in any document or web page, or to create math content with voice or handwriting.
EquatIO allows users to take a screenshot of the inaccessible equation to convert it to accessible math that will automatically be read aloud. Once the equation is converted, users can paste the equation into a Word document, or create LaTeX or MathML of the equation.
EquatIO can be used to dictate equations and formulas aloud. It understands what is said and turns the spoken input to written expressions. EquatIO can also be used to write math freehand on the device and to turn that into digital math.
The Office of Accessible Education, Diversity and Access Office, and Schwab Learning Center have purchased a campus site license for the software that extends to students, faculty, and staff computers.
System requirements
EquatIO (Desktop) is compatible with the following Operating Systems and Microsoft Word versions:
- Windows 7, 8, 10
- Mac OS 10.11 El Capitan, 10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, 10.14 Mojave
- Microsoft Word (Windows) : 2013 and 2016
- Microsoft Word (Mac) : Word 16
Inserting equations as MathType and LaTeX are currently only supported from Word 16 (v16.16.9) for Mac and Word 2016 (build 1906) for Windows. Inserting equations as images will still work on Office 2013 for Windows.

- If you sign in using a non-Stanford email address, you will only have access to the 30 day free trial. Using your Stanford email address allows you to use EquatIO for free as long as as your Stanford email address is valid.
