What is EAST?

The Education and Society Theme House at Stanford provides undergraduate students with a residential experience focused on student engagement in education. Traditional elements of the academic theme house include a year-long seminar on rotating topics in education as well as education-themed events such as panels discussing career options in the field of Education, education-theme movie screenings, outings to education-related community sites, and visits by guest speakers, particularly faculty, working in various capacities in formal and non-formal education contexts.

We also provide “blended” events that combine fun and educational value. These have included:

What We Do

Whether or not one pre-assigns to live in EAST, or is engaged in education-related academic or service activities, residents of EAST can often be heard discussing issues pertaining to education and society at large in our relaxing dining hall and other shared spaces in the residence (TV lounge/library, seminar rooms, study room, patio, and decks).

Drop-in advising is available with the Resident Fellows, both professors in the Graduate School of Education with research and teaching interests in higher education, multicultural issues, gender, international and comparative education, and research methods.

If you want to stay in touch with events at EAST House as well as other education-related events on campus and job postings, please sign-up for our mailing list.
