Strategies for Change: Research Initiatives and Recommendations to Improve Police-Community Relations in Oakland, California, with Jennifer Eberhardt

October 26, 2016 - 11:30am to 1:30pm
Faculty Club, Gold Lounge

This event is free and open to all Stanford faculty, graduate students, and CCSRE affiliates. Lunch will be served; the buffet will be available starting at 11:30am and the event will begin shortly after 12:00pm.

In May of 2014, the City of Oakland engaged SPARQ researchers to examine race relations between the Oakland Police Department (OPD) and the Oakland community. Jennifer Eberhardt will present the findings that were released by the SPARQ research team in June of 2016. In their report, Strategies for Change: Research Initiatives and Recommendations to Improve Police-Community Relations in Oakland, California, they present evidence of pervasive racial disparities in stops, searches, handcuffings, and arrests. They present an analysis of footage from OPD officers' body-worn cameras. They analyze the narratives that police officers and community members tell about their encounters with one another. They describe the training they provided to OPD staff to address racial bias in policing. And they offer fifty recommendations for reforming police culture. In this talk, Eberhardt will discuss their findings and recommendations and will describe their efforts to bridge the researcher-practitioner divide.

Jennifer Eberhardt is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Stanford and a 2014 MacArthur Fellow. She investigates the consequences of the psychological association between race and crime. For her complete bio, please visit our website.

This event is co-sponsored by Stanford SPARQ and African and African American Studies.

The RICSRE Faculty Seminar Series creates a monthly forum for faculty, students, and scholars to explore topics related to race and ethnicity in an interdisciplinary and comparative framework. Participation in the series is an excellent way to hear and discuss the work of a multidisciplinary group of colleagues from Stanford and other institutions. The series is open to all Stanford faculty, graduate students, and CCSRE affiliates. For more information, visit the CCSRE website.
