As college students, we are pressured to find out what we are supposed to do with our lives. Will we find ourselves settling in jobs that feel true to ourselves, or will we find ourselves chronically dissatisfied, hopping from job to job like replaceable automatons?

Contrary to what the title or the opening essays suggest, “The Souls of Yellow Folk” is not as much a collection about yellow folks as it is a collection that opens the possibility for fruitful discussion and growth, yet it never follows through on its potential.

In October, the year is waning. Time plays tricks on us in October: the daylight lessening, the nights “endless.” It is the month of hauntings too — of extended twilights and sudden changes in the wind. It marks the beginning of the period in which we recount the year that has passed us by. It is the time to remember.

Cathy Park Hong’s first essay collection “Minor Feelings” is named after “the racialized range of emotions” built from “the sediments of everyday racial experience and the irritant of having one’s perception of reality constantly questioned or dismissed.” Based on theorist Sianne Ngai’s “ugly feelings,” they are often interpreted as “hostile, ungrateful, jealous, depressing, and belligerent”…
