A Dose of Equality: To Kill a Mocking Bird

Just finished reading To kill a Mocking Bird ( This link is phenomenal) by Harper Lee .

This book is great! It’s a story that preludes the civil rights movement as told by a 7 year old girl ( Scout) in the span of 2 years of her life.

What I find so fascinating about the book is how the author was able to deliver the message about equality so well through the most Innocent, children.

He is a genus. Think about it, to children everybody is equal, they see no handicap, no social classes ,no color, no ethnicity they just see people. It’s life and other people who taint that beautiful instinct children have.

Now couple this beautiful instinct with a parent who treats his children with respect and intelligence then you have the perfect combination. That parent is Atticuswho throughout the book does not let evil defeat him, he keeps instilling the message of kindness to his children that they have to always meet evil with good no matter what.

This novel deals with all kinds of equality issues, poor to rich, handicapped to not, the crazy and the not so crazy, it even tackles the issue of addiction but the most prominent story is the equality between black and white.

The thing that struck me the  most is that Atticus acts exactly the same way everywhere, whether he is in his house, at the court or anywhere he goes, he is the exact same person wherever you see him. If people could only take that message from the book then that would be enough, imagine if all people are always the same to their  children, they don’t act all good and nice in front of other people then they are a beasts at home.

Just be the same person wherever you are.

I cannot urge you enough to go read this book, it’s full of wisdom in a very pure way.

I am glad I read it as an adult and parent because I got so much more out of it.

It is one of my all time favorites.

It’s hard tp pick a book after you read a great one. Maybe I will read ”World Without End” by Ken Follet.

Will Goodness Win?

Goodness [good-nis] : integrity, honesty, uprightness, probity. Goodness, morality, virtue refer to qualities of character or conduct that entitle the possessor to approval and esteem. Goodness is the simple word for the general quality recognized in character or conduct

I was reading “The lion, the witch and the wardrobe”  to little 7aki the other day. We got to the part when the white witch was chaining Aslan to the stone table. It was midway through the book and it appeared as if the white witch was defeating Aslan.

After a thoughful moment little 7aki asked me: ” Do good people always win?” .

I said: ” Yes sweety, good people always win”.

Little 7aki said: ” But Aslan didn’t win, the white witch won”

I told her: ” Aslan did not win now, but he will win at the end, good people ALWAYS win.”

But in my heart I was sad because I told a lie. Good people don’t always win and bad people win many times.

Will little 7aki grow up and try to be good only to get hurt? Will it break her heart? Should I prepare her or should I let the world teach her?

She will know, pretty fast, that no, good people don’t always win.  Badness wins most of the time.

I guess for now I like her to live in her little beautiful perfect world where being good is rewarded and good people always win and bad people lose.

A Dose of Self Discovery: Any Place I Hang My Hat

I just finished reading Any Place I Hang My Hat By Susan Isaacs.

It’s a story about a woman called Amy Lincoln who works as a journalist. She was abandoned by both parents at a very young age, her mother went to the store and never came back and her father was in and out of jail for most of her early years.

She decides that she needs to know more about herself so she goes on a quest to find more about her Mother and ends up finding a lot more.

The author, injecting the book with very witty humor, made it an enjoyable read.

Currently reading: To kill a Mocking Bird ( I am LOVING IT so far!) And if you had read this book, check out the link, great source.

The Thing I Miss the Most about Living in Jordan

I never thought I would say this but there is one thing you can’t find here in Canada that you can find in Jordan and the Middle East.

Galaxy chocolate.

When baba 7aki went to Dubai it was the first thing I asked him to get me. I said:” I NEEEEEEED galaxy”

And baba 7aki delivered.

Behold the galaxy:

Yes, it says 24. 24 bars that is.

Yes, it says 24.

Behold…

…. the gums.

Peanuts Gums

Peanuts Gums

OMG I Totally Forgot….

… to wish myself a happy birthday on my blog!!!

SO:

Happy birthday to me
Happy birthday to me
Happy birthday to 7akiiiiiiii
Happy birthday to meeeeeeee

So baba 7aki got me wicked and I mean WICKED presentSSSSSSS ( stress on the s, hahahaha)

And my birthday was yesterday.

I am 33 years old. YIKES! How did the years fly like that people??? Like, seriously, I don’t understand how I am 33. And I hate odd numbers , they are kind of creepy don’t you think?

And I want the summer to come already, I am freezing my ass here. 25 BELOW zero today, WHY? What purpose does -25 serve, seriously.

OK so I was at the library last week, I am at the library a lot these days, at least once a week and sometimes twice a week and I saw Oprah’s 20th anniversary collection (6 DVD’s) so I borrowed it. And what a fucking bummer those DVD’s were. I wanted to sob while watching half of them.

Like what the hell man, there is crying by people and Oprah in half of the 6 DVD’s. And I am hormonal and a bit sleep deprived.

But they were good, really good, I never realized Oprah was sooo amazing, I always thought she was boring and OMG wanted her to get laid already, hehehehe, but she moved me. And you have to watch this collection.

If I am to take away anything from this collection it would be the one thing that struck me the most and stayed with me. It is the simple act of how you greet or look at your child. Always have a smile on your face when you look at your kid because at a young age children only see a happy loving face or a critical face which gets them to thinking” What did I do wrong now?” or ” My parents don’t love me”, which will cause them to have so much self doubt resulting in low self esteem.

But there is soooo much more, interviews with Nelson Mandela, which was amazing because his talk and resistance of apartheid reminded me of our peoples plight. Also Sidney Poitier who is such an inspiration and many more people.

I have to say, her 20 year collection is very inspiring. I never thought I would say that about Oprah but I kinda like her after watching this.

So if I had a dinner party and I could invite 4 people dead or alive I want to invite:

- Oprah, cos she is an icon and she likes to read just like me so it would be interesting to talk to her.
- King Husain. I heard he liked fried tomatoes ( gallayet bandora). He is such a charismatic person and was such a legend.
- Jon Stewart. He is soooooooooooo funny you gotta love him.
- Gerard Butler, because he’s hot. And every dinner table NEEDS hotness. LOOOOOOOL.

Who would you invite?

Why? Some Pointless Questions

1) When we store eggs why do we have to put the pointy side down?

2) How are diapers made? And what’s that super absorbent gel?

3) Why does baby breath smell soooo good? I swear it smells like vanilla or like sweetness and yummyness. I think we should bottle that smell, it could make any woman swoon. I think it’s the baby’s gums that add to the OMGodness, OMG the gums are soooooooooooooooooooooooooo awesome!!!!!! I love the gums, I can’t say enough about how much I LOVE THE TOOTHLESS GUMS. So help me God.

4) Why do I torture myself and stay up late after the kids go to sleep at night and suffer in the morning? I HATE ME …. sometimes.

5) Why are you reading this post?

6) Why is the sky blue? I always forget this piece of information, no matter how many times I look it up, I forget.

7) Why do bloggers say goodbye and say I am done with blogging forever and blah blah and then they come back? These people bore me, I mean, if you want to stop blogging you just do that, you stop. Like Hani, he just stopped, Hani, we miss you come back

8 ) Will I ever be able to live in an Arab country again? Especially Jordan?

9) Seriously. Why are you reading this post?

10) Why do I want to have another baby when my baby is only five months old? Peoples, I have the “I want to have a baby” fever and I HAVE A BABY already!!!! Maybe I’m a quintuplet Mom in the making?
But peanut is sooooooooo good peoples, and did I tell you her breath smells sweet and delicious?

11) Who is the MOFO who said women have to remove the hair on their bodies? Who started this MOFO trend? Well, if you find that person AKA MOFO tell them I said EF YOU, MOFO!!!!

12) Why do people, when they travel to a different country, go shopping although the place they live has the exact same stuff? It’s like vacation makes the money you have seem like monopoly money. So, why?

13) Why are we on this earth?
I think we are on this earth to smell babies sweet breath. Cos peoples, I tell you, it’s worth it. I am going to start a new religion. I’ll call it BSB HAHAHAHA

14) Is funk dead?

15) What is funk?

16) How do they sell liquid milk that is not refrigerated? How is it made? Does is scare you that it does not spoil outside of the fridge? Is it made of alien milk?

17) Why is cabin fever called cabin fever?

18) Why?

What’s Your Word?

Your Word is “Fearless”

You see life as your one chance to experience everything, and you just go for it!
You believe the biggest risk is being afraid and missing out on something amazing.

Sometimes your fearlessness means you’re daring. You enjoy risky activities.
And sometimes your fearlessness means you’re courageous. You’re brave enough to do the right thing, even when it’s scary.

My Technorati Ranking

What Your Child Should Be Reading: Part 1

I LOVE children’s books. Even before I had my little 7aki I was drawn to these books and I loved reading them.

Here are some of my favorite children’s books in no particular order.

They are for different ages, from toddler to Teenager.

1) Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd.

goodnight-moon

Such a cute book where the little reader gets to say goodnight to everything in the room , from the picture frame to the brush and the comb ,makes for a very good bedtime ritual.

As a bonus, there’s a little mouse that keeps moving around and is in a different spot on every page, it’s a lot of fun for your child to find it.

2) I Love You Through and Through by Bernadette Rossetti-Shustak
illustrated by Caroline Jayne Church.

i-love-you-through-and-through

Oh how I LOVE this book. You get to read it to your child and point to everything you love about them, from their head to their toes.

3) Green Eggs and Ham by  Dr. Seuss.

green_eggs_and_ham_small

The rhyming, the illustrations and the suspense while Sam is trying to convince the thing to try the Green Eggs and Ham makes the children listening to the story mesmerised. Does he try them? Does he not?

And because of the rhyming and the word repetition, it’s great for beginner readers.

No wonder it’s the fourth best selling English-language children’s hardcover book of all time.

More recommendations to come.

Little 7aki Mistifies Me!

Little 7aki LOVES to eat the following:

2) Spinach. Which some adults don’ t even want to smell.

3) Brie cheese. Like , helloooooooo, who LIKES Brie cheese? Most people hate it. ( I love it)

brie

4) Ask her what’s your favorite vegtable and she will answer in a heart beat: Cauliflower

But tell her to taste a tomatoe and she will look at it as if it was the devil.

Sigh. Will I ever grow up?

A Dose of Sorrow and Innocence: The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas book is most probably the most sad book I’ve ever read. It is such an amazing book by the Irish Author John Boyne.

It talks about a nine year old German boy called Bruno who had to move from Berlin to a place called “Out - With” (Known to adults as Auschwitz) . Bruno looks out through his new bedroom window where he sees something unusual, little huts and thousands of people all wearing striped pyjamas.

He is very curious about what seems to him as a village and wonders, why do these people live behind this fence? They are soooo thin and so weak and they never leave their side of the fence.

What amazes me about this book is how the author was so successful in narrating the story from the perspective of an innocent nine year old boy.

Bruno describes himself as an explorer so one day he explores around the perimeter of the fence and meets Schmuel, the boy in the striped pyjamas, and they become the best of friends.

I can’t stress enough how this book moved me. I really enjoyed reading it and sometimes my heart was breaking for both Bruno and Schmuel.

Here’s an expert from a book review by the Guardian:

Given that he lives in a house of partial views and suppressed conversations, the agent of Bruno’s enlightenment comes, naturally enough, from beyond its four walls. Exploring the perimeter of the camp he encounters a boy from the striped-pyjama side called Schmuel. Over the next few months the two children swap life stories through the mesh fence. Schmuel explains how he and his family have been transported here from a ghetto in Poland. Bruno counters with stories of the niceness of his life in Berlin and the stray, worried thought that next time he should probably bring his new friend some food. (He tries, but since being an Explorer is such hungry work, he has the unfortunate habit of polishing off the bread and chocolate before arriving at their rendezvous.)

One of the great triumphs of this book is the way that John Boyne manages the shift in register from the intensely concrete inner world of his child narrator - a place where an elder sister’s pigtails or the corner of a bedroom window are branded on your inner eye - to something that borders on fable. It turns out, for instance, that both Bruno and Schmuel were born on the same day, at a stroke turning them into narrative doubles and psychic twins. And then there is the oddness of Auschwitz security being so lax that a child prisoner could make a weekly date with the commandant’s son without anyone noticing…. source spoiler warning

This book is going on my most favorites list.

The movie came out in November 2008.
