We come to the final chapter of Message Stick’s three part series charting the development of Australia’s first Indigenous-written and performed opera – Pecan Summer.
Late last year, we brought you the first two parts of this astonishing story, introducing Artistic Director Deborah Cheetham and her growing cast of emerging Indigenous classically trained singers.

Pecan Summer Part 2 sees participants involved in the intensive training programs being held at the VCA in Melbourne. Creator Deborah Cheetham works with eight participants who receive tuition in performance skills ranging from vocal ensemble and movement to a Yorta Yorta language class as parts of Pecan Summer will be performed in the traditional tongue.

Message Stick returns for 2011

From the 23rd May to 10th June, tune in Monday to Friday at 6:30pm as Message Stick returns with a new collection of documentaries from across the country.

Some of this year's programs include Back to Waiben which sees our IT Guru Majhid Heath travel to Thursday Island to participate in the RIMO conference and celebrate TSIMA's 25th Anniversary, The Wilma Reading Story a profile on successful Jazz singer Wilma Reading whose international fame rivalled some of the best in the business, but was largely unheard of in her own country; Australia and Tales from the Daly River a cinematic journey into the stories and landscape of the Daly River Region, to highlight a few.

Encore screening Sunday 1:30pm on ABC 1.

I think those critical of Uncle Max have missed the point. It is not about the animal being protected nor how it is killed. It is about connecting with the spirit of the animal and your own spirit whilst you do it. If Uncle Max didn't use a boat then ...
