The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference

Democratic presidential candidate Clinton poses for a photo with Brown after delivering the keynote address at the Women in the World summit in New York

The 6th Annual Women in the World conference was held in New York City last week. The Summit brings together business and world leaders, celebrities, rebels, peacemakers and activists to tell their stories and share their plans of action concerning the struggles and triumphs of women and girls around the globe.

The three-day conference was jam-packed with sessions discussing a broad range of issues including: climate change, diversity, education, government, healthcare, rape, sex trafficking, and sustainability, among others. This is the third year that we have been proud to sponsor the Women in the World Summit in NYC.

While the Summit boasted a wide array of power players like Meryl Streep, Hillary Clinton, Helen Mirren, Angelina Jolie, Samantha Power, Robin Wright, Barbra Streisand, Katie Couric and others; the real stars of the conference were the brave women (and men) who shared their personal experiences and the work they do every day to promote peace and make the world a better place. International law, patent law converge in oil drilling infringement suit

From Westlaw Journal Intellectual Property:

In a patent dispute between two manufacturers of oil drilling equipment, a Minnesota federal judge has ruled that U.S. patent law applies to patented technology used on U.S.-flagged ships in international waters.

U.S. District Judge Ann D. Montgomery of the District of Minnesota said that based on legislative history and case law, the 1952 Patent Act’s protection of plaintiff M-I Drilling Fluids UK Ltd.’s drilling systems extends to the oil rigs that use them.  The rigs are considered ships under maritime law.

Bring your passion for impact: A new way to connect with us

Today, candidates are looking for more than a job. They are seeking a career at a company where they can learn, grow and succeed. Cultural fit plays a huge role in those three factors; and that’s where a career site comes in. Companies now have the opportunity to provide candidates with an authentic view into their own culture, and can use their career site to show candidates who would be a good fit.

We’re excited to announce the launch of our new external career site. With the refresh of the site, our main focus is to provide an authentic view – real employees, real stories, and real content. Instead of stock photography, all photos are of current employees and their stories were written directly by them. The content on our location pages was also written by real employees, who are located in those countries and are best suited to give a glimpse of what it’s like to work for Thomson Reuters around the world. 2015 White House Correspondents’ Dinner highlights

Saturday Night Live comedian Cecily Strong speaks the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

“Dinner” is such an understatement.

Hosted by the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Dinner was held in Washington, D.C. this past weekend, bringing together top journalists, politicians, business elites, celebrities, athletes as well as media personalities. And once again, Thomson Reuters was in the thick of it, stretching “dinner” into a well-attended “weekend celebration.”

The WHCA’s primary mission is to promote journalism education and money raised from the dinner is being used to fund scholarships for 16 college students and a number of programs for students in D.C.-area high schools. We were proud to make a contribution on behalf of our business and guests to help raise the profile of what the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is actually about and put emphasis on what we value and cherish as an organization. At the Thomson Reuters Foundation, we stand for free, independent journalism, human rights, women’s empowerment, and the rule of law. We expose corruption, the human impact of climate change, and play a leading role in the global fight against human trafficking and slavery. We use the skills, values, and expertise of Thomson Reuters to run programs that trigger real change and empower people around the world. We tackle global issues. We achieve lasting impact. Explore our 2014 Thomson Reuters Foundation Annual Report

We sat down with Belinda Goldsmith, Editor-in-chief of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, to take a look back at some of the major stories covered and impact the coverage achieved.

Your team covers stories that are often overlooked by the mainstream media. What is the ultimate goal?

We cover stories at the heart of aid, development, women’s rights, human trafficking, climate change, and corruption. These are some of the world’s most pressing issues, but often those affected by them have no voice. We want to ensure that these people are not forgotten, and raise awareness about these often underreported issues. We don’t campaign, and we are not involved in advocacy; all of our stories are fair, accurate and impartial, leaving readers to form their own opinion.

2014 was a year full of major news events. What was the most unexpected story your team had to cover?

As we cover humanitarian disasters that are often overlooked by other media, when a big crisis strikes we are often already there. Take Ebola, for example. Our West Africa correspondent was the first international journalist to reach the remote village of Gueckedou, Guinea, where the Ebola outbreak began. It was only two months later that the international community started to pay attention to the virus. Recently we returned to Guinea to visit the village where it all started and interviewed the father of the first victim of Ebola, the two-year-old boy the world knows as Patient Zero. (more…)

TechVision: Emerging trends in FinTech

Our latest TechVision, Emerging Trends in FinTech, was hosted by James Powell, CTO Thomson Reuters with a panel of startups in London. From cyber security and digital currencies to online marketplaces for lending, we explored their contributions to this booming FinTech marketplace in London and beyond. Our guests included: Sachin Patel, the Head of UK Capital Markets, Funding Circle, James Merrick, Head of Operations, Digital Shadows, Dr. Tom Robinson, co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, Elliptic. After each of the panelists talked about their companies and offerings, the conversation explored why London and why now.

All of the panelists agreed that technologies such as mobile, social, and the cloud provided platforms and opportunities to the financial marketplace, which was positioned for innovation. The support of the UK government in this space has been encouraging and welcome. All of the panelists mentioned that they had US involvement, either through investment or through offices in the States. Disruption and competition were important themes for each startup and they offered the following advise: Develop and invest in your brand, focusing on your unique offerings. Partner with other startups that complement your offerings and constantly watch the space for next generation disruptors.

Journalist spotlight: Arshad Mohammed on his recent scoop

REUTERS/BAZ RATNER

In late March, Reuters exclusively reported that U.S. military bases in Kandahar and Jalalabad were likely to remain open beyond the end of 2015, as Washington considers slowing its military pull-out from Afghanistan to help the new government fight the Taliban. The anticipated policy reversal reflects the U.S. embrace of Afghanistan’s new and more cooperative president, Ashraf Ghani, and a desire to avoid the kind of collapse of local security forces that occurred in Iraq after the U.S. pull-out there. In a Reuters Best: Journalist Spotlight Q&A, Reuters correspondent Arshad Mohammed offers a behind-the-scenes look at how he, David Rohde and Phil Stewart got the scoop.

Q. How did you score the exclusive? (more…)
