In 1978, on the eve of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini told an interviewer: "Our society will be a free society, and all the elements of oppression, cruelty and force will be destroyed." More journalists and writers are now in prison in Iran than in any other country in the world. As you are no doubt aware, there has been a continuing brutal crackdown on press freedom since the disputed elections last summer.

Iran protests: festival of fire live blog
The Iranian opposition is planning to take to the streets again tonight as part of a traditional fire festival in defiance of the authorities. Follow live updates.The planned protest tonight is different from the other demonstrations staged since the disputed elections last June. It is due to happen at night rather than the day to coincide with Chaharshanbe Suri or the Feast of Fire celebrations.

Documents show Iran's quest for atomic bombs
WASHINGTON — The father of Pakistan's nuclear-weapons program has written an official account that details an Iranian attempt to buy atomic bombs from Pakistan at the end of the 1980s and also conflicts with the Pakistani government's assertion that bombmaker Abdul Qadeer Khan proliferated nuclear know-how without government approval.

Iranian authorities imprison human rights lawyer
Mohammad Oliayifard, Iranian human rights lawyer and top court attorney was arrested on the morning of March 8 after being summoned by the Revolutionary court. Oliayifard, former organizer of Human Rights Activists Collective, was arrested by security forces in Tehran.
