The shape of the new European External Action Service was one of the issues discussed by Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament. At their meeting in Berlin, the two politicians also agreed that the new and old European Union member states must grow even closer together.

The future of the European External Action Service and the Middle East peace process: these issues were to the fore during discussions between EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels. For Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, it was now a matter of creating an effective European External Action Service. At the same time he called once more for a freezing of settlement activities in east Jerusalem.

Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has welcomed the statement issued by the Middle East Quartet. Safe drinking water – everyone’s right

On World Water Day Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle received at the Federal Foreign Office Catarina de Albuquerque, the United Nations Independent Expert on human rights obligations related to safe drinking water. Westerwelle emphasized what a crucial role safe drinking water plays in enabling people to get an education and escape poverty.

Crisis management in Chile

The telephone call comes on Saturday morning, just after 6.00 a.m., from the Federal Foreign Office’s Situation Centre to the Embassy staff members in South America, reporting on a major earthquake in Chile. The German Embassy in Santiago is already dealing with the crisis.

Ceasefire agreement in Darfur

The Sudanese Government has signed a ceasefire agreement with a further rebel movement. The Spokesperson of the Federal Foreign Office welcomed the agreement and called for its rapid implementation so that the humanitarian situation can be improved for the people in Darfur.

Ambassador Mützelburg in talks with Interior Minister Atmar

Mützelburg holds talks in Afghanistan and Pakistan

Bernd Mützelburg, Germany’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, is currently on a trip to Kabul and Islamabad. In Kabul he held talks with government officials and representatives of civil society organizations and reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to long-term support for Afghanistan’s stability and reconstruction agenda.
